Неудивительно, что город несколько раз превращался в пепел из-за разрушительных пожаров. Легендарный Великий лондонский пожар остался в истории и в фольклоре, уничтожив целые кварталы и унеся вслед за собой тысячи жизней. Возгорание в пекарне Томаса Фарринера на Паддинг-Лейн привело к тому, что огонь перекинулся на соседние мастерские и склады с легко воспламеняющимися смолой, порохом и пенькой для канатов. Очевидцы страшного пожара оставили воспоминания о том, как типичные для Лондона шестиэтажные деревянные дома вспыхивали мгновенно и превращались в груду обугленных обломков. Сегодня над Лондоном уже не довлеет угроза пожара, но идиома по-прежнему актуальна, только теперь она описывает состояние, когда люди знакомятся, и между ними внезапно проскакивает «искра», и они «загораются» друг другом.
